The most famous and historically influential wine grading system in the world is undoubtedly the '1855 Bordeaux Classification.' Bottles bearing the prestigious 'Grand Cru Classé' label represent premium craftsmanship. How did this historical system come to be?
In 1855, as the Paris Exposition Universelle approached, Emperor Napoleon III requested a system to showcase the finest Bordeaux wines to visitors. The Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce asked wine brokers to classify top châteaux of the Médoc region into five distinct tiers (1st to 5th Growths). The primary criterion was market price over several decades.
The original four First Growths (Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Haut-Brion) along with Château Mouton Rothschild (promoted in 1973) form the legendary 'Five Châteaux'. 170 years later, this classification remains a cornerstone of Bordeaux wine heritage.
