The World of Independent Bottlers (IB): Differences from Official Bottlings (OB)

When exploring a liquor shop, you may find bottles labeled with distillery names like Macallan or Bowmore, but with unfamiliar designs. These bottles often bear the names of independent companies like Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory, or Cadenhead at the top. This is the intriguing world of Independent Bottling (IB).

Unlike Official Bottlings (OB) packaged directly by the distilleries, independent bottlers purchase raw new-make spirits or maturing casks from various distilleries. They mature these casks in their own warehouses, experiment with creative finishes (e.g., Sherry, Port, Rum casks), and bottle them under their own labels. This yields unique expressions that offer a fascinating contrast to the standard distillery releases.
