Scotland Whisky Distillery Tour Preparation Guide

For whiskey lovers, visiting distilleries in Scotland is the ultimate pilgrimage. However, since many historic sites are located in remote valleys and islands, careful preparation is required. Here is your real travel guide.

First, book your tours at least 2 to 3 months in advance. Premium warehouse tastings at places like Balvenie or Lagavulin have limited spots (usually 8-10 people) and sell out fast. Second, arrange transportation. Speyside and Highlands have limited public transport. If renting a car, drivers must pack samples in 'driver's drams' bottles rather than tasting on-site.

Third, prepare for Scotland's highly unpredictable weather. Waterproof jackets and hiking shoes are necessary. While still houses are hot, dunnage warehouses are damp and cold, making layered clothing the best choice.
